Editing, copying and recording continuity

Why it is important to examine both the content and the technical signs of file creation, alteration and copying.

Why this matters

A recording can be examined beyond simply listening to or viewing it. Technical signs of its creation, copying, editing, discontinuity and connection to the recording device are significant.

  • signs of alteration before or after recording;
  • breaks and insertions;
  • copying to another storage medium;
  • file transcoding;
  • inconsistency between metadata and content.
